ALBANY — New York has a new law designed to curb the rising number of home foreclosures — but unless you took out a subprime loan, most of its provisions won’t help you.

Still, lending experts and housing counselors are calling the legislation, signed into law Tuesday by Gov. David Paterson, a major step toward protecting the most vulnerable homeowners in the state.

“It’s an incredibly strong piece of legislation,” said Kirsten Keefe, an attorney at the nonprofit Empire Justice Center in Albany and a former executive director of Americans for Fairness in Lending. “New York is really ahead of the curve.”
